Sarma Masjid Al-Haram in Saudi Arabia is one of the most crowded pilgrimage locations in the world. More than two million pilgrims gather in Saudi Arabia annually during the Hajj season, and it is compulsory for them to perform a series of actions in the mosque. In the court area, pilgrims perform one of the most important rituals of Hajj, called Tawaf, which consists of seven laps of circular movement around the Kaabah, which is situated in the centre of the court. After the Tawaf, pilgrims pray in the court and leave from one of several doors. In this paper, we present a cellular automata model for the simulation of the pilgrims’ circular Tawaf movement. We also use a discrete-event model to simulate the actions and behaviours of the pilgrims. The proposed models are used in a software platform to simulate the actions and movements of pilgrims in the area. We then present an example application of the model in predicting whether specific changes to the architecture could increase the throughput of the system. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Simulation of Pedestrian Movements Using Fine Grid Cellular Automata Model
Crowd simulation is used for evacuation and crowd safety inspections, study of performance in crowd systems and animations. Cellular automata has been extensively used in modelling the crowd. In regular cellular automata models, each pedestrian occupies a single cell with the size of a pedestrian body. Since the space is divided into relatively large cells, the movements of pedestrians look lik...
متن کاملSimulation of the Pedestrian Flow in the Tawaf Area Using the Social Force Model
In today’s modern world, the number of vehicles is increasing on the road. This causes more people to choose walking instead of traveling using vehicles. Thus, proper planning of pedestrians’ paths is important to ensure the safety of pedestrians in a walking area. Crowd dynamics study the pedestrians’ behavior and modeling pedestrians’ movement to ensure safety in their walking paths. To date,...
متن کاملEdge Detection Based On Nearest Neighbor Linear Cellular Automata Rules and Fuzzy Rule Based System
Edge Detection is an important task for sharpening the boundary of images to detect the region of interest. This paper applies a linear cellular automata rules and a Mamdani Fuzzy inference model for edge detection in both monochromatic and the RGB images. In the uniform cellular automata a transition matrix has been developed for edge detection. The Results have been compared to the ...
متن کاملPattern Formation of the FitzHugh-Nagumo Model: Cellular Automata Approach
FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model is a famous Reaction-Diffusion System which first introduced for the conduction of electrical impulses along a nerve fiber. This model is also considered as an abstract model for pattern formation. Here, we have used the Cellular Automata method to simulate the pattern formation of the FHN model. It is shown that the pattern of this model is very similar to those...
متن کاملRobot Path Planning Using Cellular Automata and Genetic Algorithm
In path planning Problems, a complete description of robot geometry, environments and obstacle are presented; the main goal is routing, moving from source to destination, without dealing with obstacles. Also, the existing route should be optimal. The definition of optimality in routing is the same as minimizing the route, in other words, the best possible route to reach the destination. In most...
